You are married or in a committed relationship. Congratulations! Once the honeymoon phase wears off, you are going to need to focus some attention on keeping the marriage strong, healthy and happy. To do this, there are many skills that you already possess, and some superhero powers that you can apply as well.

One of your marriage superpowers is so simple that people often don’t realize how profound it is to a thriving relationship. It has to do with how you talk to your mate and hear each other out. Talking with our mate is something that happens so often we take it for granted, and can miss using this powerful tool. When you first fell in love, you would look each other in the eye and listen carefully to what they said. After marriage, you see each other so frequently and talk so often this doesn’t happen as much.

But listening to your mate and making sure they feel heard and understood is a powerful expression of love. It really makes a difference when we feel heard and understood when we speak, whether it is to our mate or family or coworkers or friends. We all want to feel seen and heard.  So the marriage superpower you can use tonight is to AFFIRM your mate when they talk to you. Look them in the eye. Drink in what they say. Nod or grunt or in some way acknowledge you are hearing them. The more you do this, the more your mate will feel appreciated by you, and they will feel like they are important to you.

You don’t have to hang on every word, you don’t have to stop what you are doing and look them in the eye for every conversation, after all you are married and there are lots of quick conversations and discussions. But when you ask about their day, do this. Affirm them. When they are talking about goals or problems, make sure they feel heard and understood.
